| Light Sources - Pulsed Lasers |
 |
With some subjects, particularly sprays, motion blur can
be a
problem. Using a pulsed laser can help. Both these
images were taken using the same spray subject, and
high-speed camera. The first using conventional,
continuous light source. Even with an exposure time of
1/4,500 second, the image suffers from motion blur.
The second image was taken using pulsed laser
illumination. The short pulse from the laser reduces the
exposure time to 1/40,000,000 of a second, and the
smallest droplets in the spray can be seen clearly -
frozen in flight.
The same technique can

Image plasma flowSynchronising with
our high
speed cameras is very straightforward, and framing
rates of up to 50,000 frames per second can be imaged
using a pulsed laser.
