Technique - The use of colour in monochrome vision
    .
Creating consistent contrast is the goal when selecting lighting for a machine vision application, and because no two materials respond to the same colour the same way, it is important to take time to consider the colour before purchasing a light.

The most common LED colour used for automated inspections is red, although red is not the answer for every lighting problem. So, how do you choose the LED colour that will provide the best contrast for your application?

The rule is: "Like colours lighten, opposite colours darken". For instance, a yellow object under blue light appears darker, while a blue object under blue light appears lighter.

Light colour matched to the part colour can highlight or eliminate specific characteristics, depending on the needs of the inspection. In an OCR application, green lettering on aluminium will appear darker to the CCD if a red light is used; if the inspection is for aluminium quality, that same blue green will virtually disappear under green light, allowing the vision system to look for surface flaws or defects.
